Dolomite Sprint

The Dolomite Sprint was first introduced in the autumn of 1973 to compliment the existing Dolomite saloon introduced two years earlier.  Externally, the 2 cars were very similar in appearance, only the Alloy wheels, front chin spoiler and full vinyl roof of the sportier Sprint set it apart from its more domesticated brother.

Inside it was a similar story, with no real difference between the 2 cars. However it was under skin that the important differences lay.  The engine was same in-line slant four although it was bored out to a 2 litre capacity and a new 16 valve head, a first for a production saloon car, was bolted on top.  The engine developed 127 bhp and to cope with the extra power larger drum brakes were fitted to the uprated rear axle.

The Sprint was part of the Dolomite family right up until the time the range was superceded by the Acclaim in 1981 and during its production run very few changes were made, which is surely the best tribute to the brilliance of the original car.

The 1975 Sprint shown here, which has recently been fully restored by its Surrey based owner, was originally purchased in Southampton as a company car for a High Wycombe based company however it would appear as though it was never used as such.  In 1979, the car was bought by the original owner's daugther for £1400 (which was the trade-in value against a new BMW) and it was used as a family car for a number of years, until it was eventually garaged following an expensive MOT failure.

The car was removed from the garage about 5 years ago and sat outside until it was bought by a Triumph Dolomite Club member who, unfortunately, never got round restoring it.  In 2008, the car was brought by its current owner, who only intended some basic repairs to allow him to use it as a weekend runaround.  After he started to remove the rusted parts of the car however, he "got a bit carried away".  What followed was a full bare metal restoration with a number of repair sections being created by hand.

Shortly after completion of the restoration, this car was sold and is now resident on the Isle of Mann.
